Kostas Test 2

This is a test Innovation report

FLUTSCHUTZ Load Filter

To secure dike sections that are at risk of breakage, structures made entirely of sandbags or sandbags in combination with fascines (cylindrical bundle of brushwood or similar material) or geotextiles are commonly used. The sandbags can be deployed either on the waterside or, most commonly, on the crest or on the landside dike slope. Extensive laminar seepage occurs especially on dikes with a narrow crest and a steep landside slope and when prolonged high-water levels have caused the seepage line in the dike to rise. Although minor seepages can generally be accepted, high flow velocities through the dike cause internal erosion leading to subsidence and slumping or slides of the landside slope and ultimately piping. When applying measures to prevent dike failure it has to be made sure not to increase buoyancy of the dike and to ensure that seepage water is allowed to escape. Filters with an imposed load ensure sufficient drainage and provide support to stabilize a sliding landside slope. For construction of a conventional sandbag load filter huge amounts of sandbags are needed. A sandbag load of three layers with an overall thickness of 0.3 m requires about 24 to 30 sandbags per square meter. Therefore, many hands as well as material and transports are needed to install and dismantle such a protection system.

Developed by Bremen City University of Applied Sciences

The innovative FLUTSCHUTZ Load Filter is a non-stationary water-filled tube systems made of reinforced plastic membranes. It can be used for strengthening an endangered dike line during long lasting high-water levels. Its purpose is to impose load and to ensure sufficient drainage providing support to stabilize a sliding landside slope.

TRL9. System ready for full scale deployment
Actual system proven in operational environment (competitive manufacturing). The solution is used successfully in a structurally operational environment. The user can and wants to recommend the solution to others. The FLUTSCHUTZ Load Filter was developed within the research project HWSMobile, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. Different prototypes of such water-filled tube systems for emergency flood control were developed and tested in laboratory as well as in situ. In 2012, the FLUTSCHUTZ Load Filter was tested and certified by the German Technical Inspection Agency TUV Nord for deployment in emergency flood control.

How does it work?

The innovative dike protection system FLUTSCHUTZ Load Filter is made of a drainage mat and a flexible, water-filled membranes. The empty membrane system can be brought easily to the endangered dike section to increase buoyancy of the dike and to ensure that seepage water is allowed to escape. After proper placement of the drainage mat and the empty tube system at the landside dike slope or at the dike toe the construction is filled with water using a gasolinedriven pump. For filling the on-site available flooding water can be used directly.

Limitations/conditions under which this innovation does not work or is less effective

No limitations.

Added value
The FLUTSCHUTZ Load Filter offers the following advantages compared to conventional sandbag systems: – Low consumption of resources – Rapid deployment – Only few personnel required
